the lake. Our next stop is medieval Cathedral of St. Nicolaus located in a similarly
named village. It is a symbol of the golden age of Georgian architecture, with its
façade decorations and stone carvings. Next to the village is a cave named
,,Sakinule”, a perfect site to escape from the summer hit.
The route heads to northeast towards the small city Ambrolauri, famous with its
winery. Racha is also Georgia’s second most significant wine producing area. As
many as 60 local species of grape vines were cultivated here. The most popular is
Khvanchkara (semi-sweet red vine) that can grow only in the similarly named village
near Ambrolauri. We follow east all the upstream of the river Rioni to the ancient
city Oni. Oni is an administrative center of Racha. We will overnight in a local hotel
and next day continue our driving northeast onwards health resort Utsera, known
for its mineral water, then to Shovi. Shovi (1520 masl) is a mountain climatic and
health resort on the south slopes of the main Caucasus ridge. From where we can
do most impressive hike upwards Buba and Tbilisa glaciers, leaving a lasting
impression on you. We return to Oni for overnight stay and in the 3 rd day we will
visit one of the most venerable churches in Georgia, dating back to the 11 th century.
Its actual name even translates as a ,,all-powerful” and the views from the church is
really divine. We can enjoy sandwiches picnic style at the nearby small lake and
